My greetings and thanks to you for your interest in Shiatsu and Therapeutic Massage!
Currently, I am the sole practitioner at my office location in the office of Dr. Keith Erwin of Connecticut Holistic Chiropractic, 24 Grassy Plain Street in Bethel.
My experience in massage therapy began 26 years ago with a 3 month workshop in Swedish massage. I later graduated in August 1993 from a 550 hour western massage , and a 400 hour Shiatsu program at the Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy, becoming licensed to practice in Connecticut and New York State.
I have since taken numerous workshops with John F. Barnes, P.T. in Myofascial Release, the Upledger Institute in Craniosacral therapy and Pauline Sasaki, director of Quantum Shiatsu, and continue to refine and grow in my skills through an average of 6 hours of continuing education programs per year. I receive massage myself at least once a month, making sure I maintain my own health so as to serve you better.
There are at least five specific benefits that make massage more than something that just “feels good”:
| 1. Massage |
increases blood flow within muscle tissue.
Muscle tightness, poor diet, inactivity and other factors can decrease circulation, which prevent the body from getting sufficient oxygen for peak performance |
| 2. Massage |
increases circulation of the lymphatic system.
Removal of waste from cellular activity depends on proper muscular contraction. Besides relieving muscle tension to allow efficient muscular contraction, massage gives the manual pressure to assist the process of lymph filtration. |
| 3. Massage |
releases muscle spasms.
In response to pain, a muscle will contract; even when the source of that pain is gone it will continue to tighten, causing more pain. Massage helps to break this cycle. |
| 4. Massage |
helps increase joint range of motion. |
| 5. Massage |
helps increase deeper breathing, improving body awareness. |
From this basic list comes a host of other benefits which may be unique to each person receiving massage, some of which are:
Supports immune system function as physical and emotional pain/stress are reduced,
Palliative care for patients dealing with Mesothelioma and other forms of cancer (http://www.mesothelioma.com/mesothelioma.htm ) ,
Relief of:
- Digestive disorders and respiratory problems
- Menstrual problems and reproductive imbalances
- Headaches
- Stiff neck, shoulder and back ache
While massage is not meant to diagnose or treat conditions for which a medical doctor, chiropractor or physical therapist license is required, it enhances the body's own self-healing mechanisms. Hence massage does more than just address symptoms. It touches the vitality of the whole person. Considering these facts, MASSAGE IS NOT A LUXURY!
